There are four modules in each test- Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking

Listening

This shall test your ability to understand spoken language in a variety of social and academic contexts and dialects. This, being basic skill to any language, needs careful attention. This is the first section in the IELTS. A pre-recorded listening module is played on a tape in the examination room. The tape is played only once with pauses wherever required. Candidates are given a question paper. As they listen to the tape, they should write their answers on the question paper. At the end of the test, candidates are given 10 minutes to transfer their answers to the answer sheet.

Reading

Being able to read and grasp the true meaning certifies you as able user of the language.Good reading skills are vital assets.

Academic: The reading passages include journals, articles from magazines, books, newspapers etc and one passage presents a detailed logical argument.
General: These could include notices, advertisements, booklets etc and passages which focus on social survival & general reading.

Writing

In this section, you are gauged for your writing skills. In assessing your performance in the writing test, the examiner considers your performance in following skill areas:

  • Legible Handwriting
  • Presentation and Organization
  • Formation of grammatically correct sentences
  • Using vocabulary effectively

There are two tasks for each module

  • Academic (Essay & Graph)
  • General (Essay & Letter)

Speaking

Speaking is designed to allow you to demonstrate your oral Skills in a variety of situations. In present era, effective communication skills are a pre-requisite for any individual venturing out to make a mark in this competitive world. The examiner will call you for one to one interview.

Test Format:
The total test time, excluding the speaking test, is 2 hours & 45 minutes. Your speaking test may be on the same day as the other parts, or before/after two days.

Test Scores:

Band scores are recorded on a Test Report Form, showing overall ability as well as performance in listening, reading, writing and speaking IELTS results are graded which test scores ranges from unique IELTS 1-9 band scale. The tests are designed to cover the full range of ability from non-user to expert user.

Bandscore Skill Level Description
Band 9 Expert user You have a full operational command of the language. Your use of English is appropriate, accurate and fluent, and you show complete understanding.
Band 8 Verry good user You have a fully operational command of the language with only occasional unsystematic inaccuracies and inappropriate usage. You may misunderstand some things in unfamiliar situations. You handle complex detailed argumentation well.
Band 7 Good user You have an operational command of the language, though with occasional inaccuracies, inappropriate usage and misunderstandings in some situations. Generally you handle complex language well and understand detailed reasoning.
Band 6 Competent good user Generally you have an effective command of the language despite some inaccuracies, inappropriate usage and misunderstandings. You can use and understand fairly complex language, particularly in familiar situations.
Band 5 Modest user You have a partial command of the language, and cope with overall meaning in most situations, although you are likely to make many mistakes. You should be able to handle basic communication in your own field.
Band 4 Limited user Your basic competence is limited to familiar situations. You frequently show problems in understanding and expression. You are not able to use complex language.
Band 3 Extremely limited user You convey and understand only general meaning in very familiar situations. There are frequent breakdowns in communication.
Band 2 Intermittent user You have great difficulty understanding spoken and written English.
Band 1 Non-user You have no ability to use the language except a few isolated words.
Band 0 Did not attempt the test You did not answer the questions.
